Do you think the Philippine government now realized how important it is to support Filipino scientists? (Quora.com) |
|
“I love my country so much, which is why I criticize it...
No. Even after COVID, nothing is going to change in how much we value scientists.
First, the current status quo means that many Filipinos tend to disregard science in favor of religion, further reinforced by our anti-intellectualism and derision of smart people. Eh, ‘di wow, ikaw na matalino (“okay, wow, you’re the smart one” said sardonically) is the battlecry for morons who can’t stand intelligent and rational people.
Second, if you want us to become as science-minded as China, Israel and Europe, that entails our leaders actively promoting scientific research and reason. Apparently, that’s not happening right now as our politicians continue making policies based on their Catholic beliefs.
Third, even if the government would invest more in R&D, much of the funds will be lost in corruption anyway. Less funds, less output.
Fourth, the Roman Catholic Church is actively involved in our politics. So much for separation of Church and State. Weaning off the people from depending on Church dogma over science and reason is a generational change.
Fifth and finally, we don’t pay our scientists well. Which is why we experience brain drain despite the fact our scientists being just as smart as Western and Eastern scientists.
Point being, we as a nation will never embrace science and extol our scientists until we get rid of religion in our politics, embrace science, keep religion as a personal affair, invest a lot in R&D and pay our scientists handsomely.” |
