He had previously been champion of Geneva where he added the city‘s name to his own. He had to learn the game all over again, starting from how each piece moved. He was a member of an underground Bolshevik organization in high school, which led to his expusion. Forbidden to re-enter any Russian school, he went to Geneva where he performed party work for Lenin. During the October Revolution and Russian Civil War he was the head of the Moscow Reservists. He organized the first USSR chess championship in 1920. He won the first Trade Unions Championship of the USSR in 1927. [DSB, Internet] ® E

Imagination in chess Q & (19cm x 13cm, 96pp). Sixty forcing direct mates presented as teaching material for young players, retained to demonstrate that problems to this ancient recipe, predominant until the 1850s but long considered outdated as problems, were still found useful as teaching material in the present century. Whitehead and Miller, Leeds, undated but the dedicatee “who has solved many of them” was born in 1926. Formerly in the possession of N. A. Macleod; presented by Mrs Macleod. [BL]

Imitator chess E. Place a new piece, called an imitator (a coin doesthe job nicely), on the square d4, otherwise the setup is the same asnormal chess. No players take turns making normal chess moves, buteach time they move a piece from <X1,Y1> to <X2,Y2>, they also movethe imitator from <XI,YI> to <XI+X2-X1,YI+Y2-Y1>. For example, if the imitator is on d4 and I move Ng1-f3, I then must move imitatorto c6. If making this move would put the imitator on an occupiedsquare (after moving your own piece) or off the board, that move isillegal. ® Imitator ® Imitator-Schach [LH] ® Groschenschach

[Erfinder: G. Jansen (= Th. C. L. Kok), 3615. Fairy Chess Review IV 1939 S. 180-181; J. Indian Game - Alekhine Anti-Gruenfeld E D70 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.f3. Alekhine‘s Anti-Grünfeld system was introduced to the world in the 1929 World Championship match between Alekhine and Grünfeld. It has never really caught on, largely because Black can actually carry out the Grünfeld strategy despite White‘s support of the center. Of course the opening makes little sense against players who have the King‘s Indian and Benoni in their repertories, since Black can comfortably slide into those openings, where the move f3 is well-established in the main lines. 3...d5 Grünfeld players should not hesitate to confront White‘s strategy directly, daring the opponent to occupy the center with pawns in true hypermodern style. 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nb6 6.Nc3 Bg7 7.Be3 0-0. [I. G. Richardson, Variant Chess 3, VII-IX/1990, S. 26-27]

Innocent III Pope Innocent III made a ruling which, for better or worse, does not apply in modern time. International Politics (1) Chess is played at the international level, and sometimes politics rears ist ugly head. For many years, players from some Arab countries were not permitted to play against Israeli opponents. At the Chess Olympiad, the teams were not paired. But in the very informal blitz tournament at the 1988 Olympiad in Thessaloniki no one bothered to keep track. So at one point a player from the United Arab Emirates played an Israeli player. When this was discovered, his head of delegation ordered him to forfeit the game. E [TR]

International Politics (2) Albania used to be a pretty secretive country, and their players were not allowed to play against Americans nor get too friendly. At the 1980 Olympiad in Malta, NBC wanted to take some film of the event, and the rules allowed this provided that the teams involved did not object. Communication with the teams was the job of the arbiter assigned to the match involved. It happened that NBC wanted some picture of the Albanians, since Americans didn‘t usually get to see Albanian sportsment. The only problem was that the arbiter, American Eric Schiller, had to get the permission of the Albanian captain. Schiller, a linguist with command of English, Russian, German and a few other languages, did not speak Albanian. He tried English. The Albanian captain came back with French, Schiller tried German, the Albanian came back with Italian. Finally Schiller, frustrated, swore in Russian. The Albanian grinned and the conversation took place in Russian. The crew got their film. E [TR]

Italian a Rules pE: circa 14th century, were basically the same as the Spanish rules given above, as circa 1500, but with these notable exceptions: 1. The EN PASSANT capture was not allowed. The phrase “passar bataglia” refers to the ability of pawns to pass one another unmolested. 2. The PAWN promoted likewise, and the new queen continues to enjoy the right of the special first move, but may not check or capture thereby. 3. The KING may make the same first move leap, but add the squares b1 and b2 to the list. 4. Stalemate is a draw. Bare king does not win. 5. The queen and king could move simultaneously, if it was the first move for both. [LH] ®

Italy E = ITA = The Italian Chess Federation refused to allow one of its best players, Stefano Tatai, to play on the Italian Olympiad team. Tatai was 44 and seven time national champion. The Italian Chess Federation only wanted members that were age 30 or younger to represent Italy. The result was a very poor showing at the olympiad. The 1980 Italian championship was delayed until 1981 because of an earthquake. [CT] Schach = Italian: Scacchi, German: Schach, French: Échecs Slovene(?) ®
