When, almost two years later, I accepted an invitation from the renowned Prof. Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann—the celebrated "Pythia of Bonn"—to join her research team in Allensbach on Lake Constance, my experimental work and calculations were already complete. Only the writing of my dissertation remained…
This time, however, it was delayed by the demands of earning a living and the joyful distractions of raising two wonderful little boys, enriched with the creative bedtime stories I crafted for them.
The final dissertation, comprising 342 pages, marked the culmination of 3 ½ years of intense intellectual effort—still faster than the average of 5 years for an empirical-experimental Ph.D. in Germany. Achieving this milestone required not only the ability to navigate independent scientific research but also a resolute determination to see it through.
Made in Germany: A doctorate grounded in rigorous education, thorough experimentation, and unwavering perseverance—truly a journey of growth and discovery.

On my 50th birthday I played a simultaneous chess exhibition in Düsseldorf against 16 opponents. The event was filled with good humour and great fun and marked the end of my years playing simuls.
Later that year I attended a Garry Kasparov simul in Frankfurt and witnessed his extraordinary skill at his peak rating of 2851!
First contact with the famous Ex-World champion: → Garry Kasparov in his extremely strong simul in ü Frankfurt - on his peak ELO 2851 (!)

Alexei Shirov (ELO >2700, peak 2755) faced a room full of challengers. By the end of the event, only four players, myself included, managed to secure a draw—nobody could win against him! After the game, he shared his birthday table with the 4 players with a draw. Shirov and I had a fascinating discussion. He told me that he had once considered becoming a psychologist—a shared interest of ours—but his rapid and overwhelming success in chess left him little time to pursue it. Our conversation, lasting several hours, revealed the thoughtful and multi-dimensional personality behind his extraordinary chess talent. The final position on the board was tense, and after my move 37...Rd2, Shirov responded with 38.Rxb5. Anticipating my follow-up 38...Rc2, he offered a draw, which I gratefully accepted. |
