Liebe Oma!

 Greetings from San Confiscente from your Nina. Greetings, of course, from mommy - and even from daddy, who thinks it's a pity that you are not here with us. Mostly we have over 40° Celsius in the shade, and some older people, he says, have already had a sunstroke. That's all from the ozone, says daddy. And from the effort, until you find a few meters free beach.

 Liebe Grüße aus San Confiscente von Deiner Nina. Grüße natürlich auch von Mama - und sogar von Papa, der es ganz schade findet, dass Du nicht dabei bist. Meistens haben wir über 40° Celsius im Schatten, und einige ältere Leute, sagt er, haben schon einen Sonnenstich gekriegt. Das kommt alles vom Ozon, sagt Papa. Und von der Anstrengung, bis man ein paar freie Meter Strand findet.

 The holiday is very nice. Dad has become properly brown since his sunburn; he had to lie in the sun for days because he had the wrong skin tone, says mom, to let everyone at home see that we paid a lot of money for three weeks.  They have unsubscribed the phone in the apartment because writing letters is much nicer.

 Der Urlaub ist sehr schön. Papa ist tüchtig braun geworden seit dem Sonnenbrand; er hatte dafür tagelang in der Sonne liegen müssen, weil er die falsche Haut hat, sagt Mama, und damit es zu Hause alle sehen können, dass wir drei Wochen lang viel Geld bezahlt haben. Das Telefon in der Ferienwohnung haben sie abbestellt, weil Briefe schreiben viel schöner ist.

 The holiday is really great. Mom bought a huge straw hat to read underneath when dad talks to her. The hat is worth two hats, because everything is twice as expensive as last year.

 Der Urlaub ist richtig klasse. Mama hat sich einen riesengroßen Strohhut gekauft, um darunter zu lesen, wenn sich Papa mit ihr unterhält. Der Hut ist zwei Hüte wert, da alles doppelt so teuer ist wie letztes Jahr.

 The journey to here was really great. Mom was not allowed to drive, so dad could set a new record. It only took twenty-six hours, and the car was in the garage three times.

 Die Fahrt hierher war ganz toll. Mama durfte nicht ans Steuer, damit Papa einen neuen Rekord schaffen konnte. Es hat nur sechsundzwanzig Stunden gedauert, und das Auto war dreimal in der Werkstatt.

 The holiday is so nice because we do not have to do anything because of the heat. I can always play with the other kids, so that dad and mom can blame themselves undisturbed. Only at night they do not argue since I sleep with Mama -and dad in my room, so that they can really relax from the holiday.

 Der Urlaub ist so schön, weil wir wegen der Hitze nichts unternehmen müssen. Ich kann immer mit den anderen Kindern spielen, so dass Papa und Mama sich ganz ungestört Vorwürfe machen können. Nur nachts streiten sie gar nicht, seit ich bei Mama schlafe und Papa in meinem Zimmer, damit sie sich einmal so richtig ausruhen können vom Urlaub machen.

 By the way, you can swim in the sea, and there is even a lot of soap foam in it; they've thought of everything, daddy says, since this story with the oil tanker.

 Im Meer kann man übrigens toll baden, und es ist sogar eine Menge Seifenschaum drin; sie haben an alles gedacht, sagt Papa, seit der Sache mit dem Öltanker.

 The holiday is full of surprises, because every day we go to another restaurant. Dad and Mom often do not know what to order since we all had diarrhea.

 Der Urlaub ist voller Überraschungen, weil wir jeden Tag in ein anderes Restaurant essen gehen. Papa und Mama wissen oft gar nicht, was sie bestellen sollen, seit wir alle Durchfall bekamen.

 It is also nice that so many other children are there. It does not matter if you put bad words in your mouth, because nobody speaks the language of the other one. Only a slightly larger Dutch boy is halfway understandable, he is constantly threatening with 'Ik hou van jou' or something like that.

 Schön ist auch, dass so viele andere Kinder da sind. Es ist hier gar nicht schlimm, wenn man Schimpfwörter in den Mund nimmt, da keiner die Sprache des anderen spricht. Nur ein etwas größerer holländischer Junge ist halbwegs zu verstehen, dauernd droht er ‘Ik hou van jou’ oder so ähnlich.

 Last night, we did a boat trip. 'How romantic!' Mommy used to say, 'at full moon.' The people were in a great mood and had a lot of fun before the shark passed by. When one saw the fin in the water, they began on command to call for help - really great! Suddenly someone with a loudspeaker appeared on the ship. He loudly shouted 'Cut!', then they pulled a big rubber shark out of the water, and unfortunately I was not allowed to scream, as loud as I could, anymore.

 Gestern Abend, da haben wir eine Bootsfahrt gemacht. ‘Wie romantisch!’ hat Mama immer wieder gesagt, ‘bei Vollmond.’ Die Leute waren toll gelaunt und hatten mächtig Spaß, bevor der Hai vorbeikam. Als einer die Flosse im Wasser sah, begannen sie auf Kommando alle um Hilfe zu rufen - echt Spitze! Plötzlich tauchte auf dem Schiff daneben jemand mit einem Lautsprecher auf. Er rief ganz laut ‘Cut!’, da zogen sie einen großen Gummi-Hai aus dem Wasser, und ich durfte leider nicht mehr weiter schreien, so laut ich konnte.

 Although the holiday is so nice, we have to go home on Wednesday, too bad. You cannot raise your demands too high, daddy saíd. That's why we'll be heading back to San Confiscente next year, again. When we come home on Thursday, we will first eat with you and grandpa really full, he said.

 Obwohl der Urlaub so schön ist, müssen wir am Mittwoch wieder nach Hause fahren, schade. Man darf seine Ansprüche nämlich nicht zu hoch schrauben, sagt Papa. Darum werden wir nächstes Jahr wieder hierher nach San Confiscente fahren. Wenn wir am Donnerstag zurückkommen, werden wir uns erst mal bei Dir und Opa so richtig satt essen, meinte er
